Downtown Dogs Get 'SmartBark'

Los Angeles, California (May 7, 2007) –As more dog owners move into Downtown, developers and business owners are starting to get savvy about offering pet amenities. At the 161-unit Little Tokyo Lofts, developer Hammer Ventures has put the finishing touches on a 100-foot dog run with all the bells and whistles. The so-called "SmartBark" is comprised of a fenced-in area with benches, a Dogipot waste station and synthetic turf that can be easily cleaned. The environmentally friendly landscape also features recycled tires in place of mulch. The doggie park, designed by Intelligent Environments, gives a nod to the Little Tokyo community, with a tongue-in-cheek mural by artist Jason Fischer - four dogs in kabuki dress and makeup. A recent demographic study found that nearly 20% of Downtown households own dogs.
